We know that diet influences much of an organism's life history traits, but are there effects on mating? In our latest study using BSFs as our model species, we reveal sex-specific differences in response to a range of diets, and highlight complex interactions between nutrition, development, and reproductive strategies.
Credits to the capable students who have brought this project to fruition: Qihui (PhD), Jielin (Msc), Wells and Keng Hee (undergraduates) . Our MinION vs Illumina paper is out! We carried out DNA metabarcoding of mosquito bulk samples using MinION sequencing and benchmarked the results against the Illumina MiSeq platform, finding high congruency at species level https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fitd.2024.1223435/full Congrats Rebecca (RA) Tyrone (PhD), Huiqing (ex-PhD), annd Tze Xuan (ex-undergradate)!
A glimpse into Reprolab's busy month of February:
1. A festive holiday to kickstart the month! Can't miss doing a louhei for Lunar New Year to welcome prosperity.
2. What better way to mark the start of NUS's recess week than a lab walk? It was a busy hike (especially for the cameras XD) from Kent Ridge Park to Vivo City filled with spiders, Tussock moth caterpillars, and a rewarding dinner at Vivo where we had a farewell dinner for our RA Yong Jen. All the best Yong Jen!
Good food and great company, what more could one ask for? It's been a great year with Reprolab. Looking forward to another year with these people ❤️

Our lab visited Ento Industries' BSF facility in Tuas for an insightful tour yesterday. Many thanks for the warm hospitality! Credits to Vartika (NTU) and Nathaniel (Ento) for making this trip possible. Keep in touch and happy collaborating!  Reprolab was invited to participate in yesterday's SFA-NUS Science Day 2023 to showcase our current research. Glad to have introduced our black soldier flies (BSFs) to those who came by!  An overview of the NUS booth (with our PhD student Shakthee manning the fort and introducing the BSFs to an attentive listener!)
