After learning about black soldier flies (BSFs) and their possible role in Singapore's food security from Dr. P, graduate students from the module BL5313 (Food Security and Sustainability) recently came over to the NUS BSF facility to look at how we rear these flies. Shoutout to Yong Jen (RA) for the tour, and thank you Dr Maxine for reaching out to us! We hope to see you next AY :)

Reprolab took a break during the university's recess week to let loose and have a lab outing together. Thanks to everyone who came and hope you guys had fun :D Grabbing our bikes from the GoCycling kiosk (no this isn't a sponsored post) But first, dinner at Dr. P's! Cycling through Singapore's late-night spots The RAs tanking the last stretch to the bike kiosk at Changi Beach! Muscles aching but happy that we survived the trip
Our BSF Team (in collaboration researchers from NTU & SEC) participated in NTU CCA 's IdeasFest 2023, held across February 16 to 19, 2023. Shoutout to our SEC collaborator Niraly Mangal (SEC) for inviting us to be a part of this public event and taking the lead in preparations! She also shared about the importance of her current work on designing future food systems using BSFs during her scheduled talk at SEC. We also prepared an exhibition at Gillman Barracks where we showed what these flies are capable of!
Our graduate students attended the 27th Biological Sciences Graduate Congress (BSGC) hosted by Chulalongkorn University. They had a great time networking while there from 15 Dec 2022- 17 Dec 2022 (and even managed to sightsee across Bangkok!).
Congrats Adrian for winning SFIAR Master's Thesis Award 2022! You can find his research published in Frontiers in Microbiology here.
Did anyone miss Dr. P's talk on the last day of Ento22? Here's the recording of livestream where she introduced the work being done by our students. Check it out!
.Congratulations to our resident beetle guy for successfully defending his PhD yesterday! Reprolab's first PhD student has graduated!! All the best in your new lab Dr. Yap.
First off, some words from the main parties involved:
Thanks to all who came for the post-defense celebration!
Yesterday, Reprolab went down to the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) to support NP and our collaborators during the joint BSF seminar hosted by SEC. Together with Professor Stephen Cairns, Adrian Fuhrmann (who is also our PhD student), Dr. Moritz Gold and Niraly Mangal, they introduced the audiences to the scope and themes covered in this collaboration. The turnout was great! They also shared how Black Soldier Flies can be used in food waste management and sustainable food production in urban systems, to support Singapore's 30-by-30 aspiration (i.e., meeting 30% of nutritional requirements domestically by 2030). Here are some snapshots of the event: You can find out more about this collaboration in this article:
http://www.reprolabnus.com/news/the-straits-times-bsf-interview A new semester has begun! If you're lucky, you might catch Dr. P in action at the following NUS modules: LSM2107 Evolutionary biology and LSM4259 Evolutionary genetics of reproduction. Our graduate students Tyrone and Qihui will also be assisting her at LSM2107 Evolutionary biology. See you there, students!
Throwback to the time Reprolab took a break from doing science... to look for wildlife outdoors! Dr. P doing the honours for the 1st group photo taken as we were heading off from Buona Vista mrt. Spot our newest PhD student, Adrian from ETH!
Reached the former railway line! Last stop, Singapore Quarry! See everyone next time for our next lab outing.
